“Hospitals besieged by the asymptomatic, the fault of the alarmists”. Bassetti’s nightmare comes true

The monthly National Primacy on newsstands

Rome, 9 Nov – He had predicted it well, in decidedly unsuspecting times. It was the month of August when the Genoese infectious disease specialist Matteo Bassetti warned of the risk related to media alarmism on Covid-19: “at the first sneeze, or at the first cough, our health system will blow up because of those who terrorized the people. If we keep saying “You get Covid, you’re fried and die”, do you know what happens? That the first one who gets a sneeze, or 37.2 in temperature, runs to the emergency room. This will mean for us to blow up ».

Concerns become reality

Three months later, Bassetti’s concerns are a reality. The first aid system is collapsing, “besieged by thousands of asymptomatic or slightly symptomatic people who could easily be treated at home and instead storm the emergency rooms, they clog hospital switchboards, waste doctors’ time. And everything happens because they were frightened by the institutions, which should have reassured them ».

Terror is synonymous with chaos

He reiterated this in an interview published this morning by Free pointing the finger, as he had done previously, against institutional communication: “Terrorizing people can help them stay at home, but at the hospital level, managing a panicked population only generates chaos».

Fear fills the hospitals

According to the director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino Hospital in Genoa, “panic and fear of being intubated»Amplified to exhaustion by the media, virologists, institutions,« to do explode the health system, not the sick. If I receive a hundred phone calls a day from those who are not sick, how do I treat the real sick? ” Not to mention that “the majority of positives are asymptomatic or not very symptomatic and that the virus has a lethality of less than 1% and is especially bad for elderly patients with already compromised health”.

To those who object that there have been cases – although rare – of very virulent Covid-19 in very young subjects, Bassetti replies: “Because it is a bad infection and there are many factors: genetics, health conditions, the state of the immune defenses at the moment of contagion, the introjected viral load. But even before the appearance of Covid, pneumonia contracted outside the hospital it was the fifth leading cause of death in the world, and also killed 50-year-olds and children».
