Hospitality Vienna sounds the alarm: schnitzel is threatened | Abroad

Many restaurant visitors are more careful than before, says industry president Mario Pulker: “People come, but they spend less.”

Historically expensive

In the traditional Viennese restaurant Figlmuller a veal schnitzel now costs 22.90 euros, which is historically expensive. A pork schnitzel should also cost 17.90 euros. Hans Figlmüller explains to the website Ö24.at: „Currently, purchase prices for foodstuffs such as sunflower oil are three times higher than normal. Veal and pork rose between 30 and 40 percent and the energy has also doubled. We cannot pass on all costs to customers, but we have to adjust now.”

The price of energy is also making itself felt. Cold stores work overtime and in the Austrian kitchen there is a relatively large amount of fried food, which costs a lot of energy. Energy prices have also increased enormously in Austria, more than doubling.

Fortune

Owner Erwin Scheiflinger of Bastei Beisl is very frustrated with all the price increases. He foresees a historic intervention: “Soon there will be no more veal schnitzel in Vienna, because the meat just costs a small fortune.”
