Horticultural feast in Juhu, which also doubles as an entertainment venue.

Located on Gulmohar Road in Juhu, Kishore Kumar Park welcomes visitors with its variety of greenery at both entrances. With well-organized and well-maintained areas, the park is home to a wide variety of plants.

Designed by civic activist and architect BK Das, the venue is a horticultural feast featuring around 20 native plant species, 15 flowering plant species, and 10 commonly used medicinal herbs. Throughout the afternoon you can see butterflies flying and flirting with the flowers. Spread over an area of 8,989 square meters, the park is home to magnificent trees that gently filter the sun’s rays, providing shade and fresh air.

Included in the amusement park reserve, the park fully fulfills its purpose. The attractive colors of green, certainly a unique feature, and the usual group of vibrant walkers and joggers make this park a frequent visitor of all ages for a variety of purposes.

At its center is an elaborate and elegant amphitheater, surrounded by verdant grassy slopes that offer a variety of performances in the evenings. Skaters and skateboarders jump and slide along the edges of the round platform, while youngsters play ball or badminton in the center. Once or twice a month, a group of elderly people from the Juhu area visit the park, where they hold karaoke sessions and sing Kishore Kumar songs.

Many open dome-shaped structures around the park are connected by pebble paths and allow for such activities. A group of friends use a place like this to practice hip-hop dancing every day. “This place was a great help to me,” says Sohan Munda, a regular with the group. “I have been coming here every morning and evening for the last four years. The garden staff are very helpful and my friends and I come here every day to practice.

As endearing as the park is, the land it sits on was formerly used for a clubhouse, of which a sizeable portion has even been installed. A decade of relentless efforts by civic and activist groups, spearheaded by filmmaker and social activist Ashok Pandit, have succeeded in dismantling the Clubhouse project. The park designer also played a key role in doing this. Table master Zakir Hussain’s performance at the park’s opening ceremony in 2017 marked the end of a successful fight.

Today, the spot serves as a great morning start for runners in Juhu, and everyone nearby is now commonly referred to as the “park.”
