Cruel video was obtained by CNN from the war-torn city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine. Three Ukrainian soldiers are executed as they surrender to Russian forces. Drone shows them on the street, a few minutes later they lie on the ground and execute them.
The Ukrainian official who provided the drone footage said their unit was aware of multiple similar cases on the front lines that had not been made public or investigated.
Ukraine’s attorney general told CNN that his office is investigating 28 such incidents since the start of the war, in which a total of 62 Ukrainian servicemen have died.
The footage from Pokrovsk reflects the relentlessly brutal tactics of the Russian military as it continues to advance into eastern Ukraine.
“These are war crimes”
Ukrainian prosecutors said the alleged killings were war crimes and part of an orchestrated policy by the Kremlin. “If the prisoners of war surrender, if they show that they surrender, if they don’t have weapons in their hands, then the execution is a war crime,” Andriy Kostin, Ukraine’s attorney general, told CNN.
Kostin argued that such crimes were committed in different regions of Ukraine, by different units, giving Kiev “an opportunity to claim that such a policy could (reduce) to crimes against humanity. This policy is orchestrated by the Kremlin. It is an order of specific commanders.”
