Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

This is how the newly elected president answered the broadcasting company’s question whether the Czech Republic and its allies are ready to support Ukraine “as much as necessary”.

“We have to hope for the best. But it’s even better to be prepared for worst-case scenarios. It doesn’t mean we have to give them a higher priority, but we have to recognize that the war may not end this year, turn into a frozen conflict, some other kind of conflict at different levels. We have to be ready for it,” Pavel said.

“Therefore, it is important to provide Ukraine with everything necessary, especially with military equipment, as well as financial assistance, to continue the defense of the country and turn it into a victory. But we must also be ready to support Ukraine in the long-term perspective, and we must be able to explain this to our citizens.” the newly elected president stated.

He admitted that he fully expected the escalation of rhetoric that the Kremlin has started in response to Western aid to Ukraine, as it is foreseen by the Kremlin doctrine.

“I believe that NATO needs a more determined approach and an indication that we are not violating international law,” said Pavel.
