KlikBabel.com – The Nasa helicopter on Mars, Ingenuity, successfully carried out its fourth test flight on May 1.

The 1.8 kg helicopter took off from the surface of Jezero Crater at 10:49 EDT.

Ingenuity achieved all of its major goals by demonstrating the technology on the first to third flights which took place on April 19, April 22 and April 25.

On this fourth flight, the solar powered device hovered 266 meters with a top speed of 8 mph during a 117-second flight.

The previous third flight allowed the helicopter to fly 100 meters at a maximum speed of 4.5 mph for 80 seconds.

Ingenuity’s fourth flight was delayed by one day due to problems. According to the mission team, Ingenuity cannot switch to flight mode.

If all goes according to plan, Ingenuity also took 60 photos with the navigation camera facing down and five photos with a 13 MP color imager on this fourth flight.

“Success! #MarsHelicopter completed its fourth flight, going farther and faster than before. It also took more photos while flying on the surface of Mars,” wrote NASA via Twitter account @NASAJPL, quoted from Space.com, Sunday (2/5/2021).

So far, Ingenuity has also been able to spot the Perseverance rover from the air during its third flight and capture a never-before-taken image.

Perseverance carries two onboard microphones and the rover attempts to record the sound of Ingenuity’s fourth flight for the first time.

According to NASA, the team had to wait until the data arrived on Earth to determine whether the recording was successful.
