Honorary doctorate for climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb

Graz. Climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Graz University of Technology. Isidor Kamrat and Gerhard Kelz were awarded the Archduke Johann Medal.

“Helga Kromp-Kolb’s honor is recognition of her impressive and tireless commitment to climate protection and a sustainable society,” said Rector Harald Kainz in his speech at the honor ceremony in the auditorium of the HERE Graz.

Meteorologist and climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb was head of the field of environmental meteorology at the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) and the University of Vienna before accepting the call to BOKU Vienna. She is the author of the “Black Book on Climate Change” (2005) and “Plus Two Degrees: Why We Should Warm Up to Save the World” (2018).

Even after his retirement in 2017, he is a board member of the Climate Change Center Austria, a founding member of the Alliance for Sustainable Universities and promoter of the project “Universities and Sustainable Development Goals (UniNetz)”. She is also widely known to the general public for her vehement advocacy of climate protection.

Archduke Johann medal for Kamrat and Kelz

At the same time as Helga Kromp-Kolb was awarded an honorary doctorate, the Graz University of Technology awarded two Archduke John medals:

  • Isidor Kamrat was awarded the Archduke Johann Medal for the development of Campusonline and the IT infrastructure of the Graz University of Technology. 25 years ago, under his leadership, the development of the system of information management for education. TUGrazonline is the root of Campusonline, currently used in around 40 universities in Austria and Germany.
  • Gerhard Kelz was awarded the Archduke Johann Medal for his work on the infrastructure development of the Graz University of Technology. From 2005 to 2022, Kelz headed the “Buildings and Technology” department at the Graz University of Technology and has introduced the concept of energy management and university mobility.
