Hondurans in NYC celebrate opposition candidate going forward

Hondurans in our area are optimistic about the preliminary results of the elections.

“We wait for the change because right now the country is very bad,” said Angel Membrano.

“That he do his best, that he make the change, that he make a difference to what was previously,” said Carlos Suazo, another Honduran.

In a restaurant in Jamaica, Queens, we spoke with several people, who said they welcomed the election of the first woman, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, as president of the Central American country.

“It’s fine, it’s fine, because a woman hadn’t won, she understands me … that changes are seen, not only by saying but with deeds, right,” said Delmy Garay.

In the most recent count, Castro got more than 53 percent of the vote, while National Party candidate Nasry Asfura got 34 percent.

Castro’s victory would return power to the left-wing Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party for the first time since former President Manuel Zelaya, Xiomara Castro’s husband, was ousted by a coup in 2009.

Turnout in these elections, nearly 70 percent, was historic. This percentage represents more than 3 million people of the more than five million who have the right to vote.

“I am very happy that people have come out en masse to vote and to vote well because they voted for Mrs. Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, and that indicates that the people really want change for the country,” added Monserrat Morrillo.

In addition to optimism, many Hondurans know that the new president will face great obstacles, such as establishing the economy of a country that was rocked by the pandemic and natural disasters.

“New job opportunities, more study opportunities, such as scholarships and public assistance that can help the country,” said Fernando Zambula.

To which is added the high level of crime and immigration to the United States.

“Let all crime and poverty end, because all that comes from poverty,” added María Solano.

“That the immigration to this country also ends, that leaving your country and being here for so long is hard and knowing that there is no improvement is hard for you because you cannot return there, you have no hope of returning because there are no opportunities to nothing, “said Solano.

Meanwhile, these Hondurans from our area are still waiting for the final results of this election that have not yet been released.
