One homeless man died and another was injured, this morning, in a violent fire that destroyed a vacant building on the lane of Hortas, in the center of Póvoa de Varzim.
The alert fell at the fire station at 23.20 pm on Wednesday. Upon arrival at the site, the flames that left the roof scared the residents of the adjacent streets.
After a lot of work, the fire was finally extinguished, but there was nothing left to do to save a homeless man, around 40, who was found only during the aftermath operations.
Another homeless man, also in his 40s, was in the vacant building, but managed to get out in time. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Póvoa hospital. This was the one who informed the authorities that the colleague was still inside and that the two used to stay there overnight.
In the fight against the flames were 26 firefighters from the Póvoa de Varzim corporation, supported by ten vehicles.
