Hollywood | Adrian Nicholas Valdez, Composer of “Godzilla vs. Kong” Trailer Music, Details How the Movie Trailer Industry Works

What must a trailer have to fulfill its mission, that is, to produce in the viewer an irremediable desire to see the movie it promotes? There are at least three ingredients: powerful visuals, small doses of plot, and music that captures the atmosphere that will surround the film. The latter he knows better than anyone, Adrian Nicholas Valdez, Peruvian musician specialized in composing pieces for the previews of various productions of Hollywood.

His story, as he told RPP News, begins like that of others who feel the call of music from a young age: a band in their adolescence, presentations in the bars of their city – in their case, Lima – and, later, the dilemma of choosing a career that covers their survival or continue betting on your passion. But Adrian Nicholas He was determined to make music and make a living from it, and he went to Ecuador, to the San Francisco de Quito University, where he trained as a professional musician.

“When I was about to graduate, I realized that something I really liked was creating, composing music. He admired Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and other film composers. There I decided to be a composer for media, that is, movies, video games, advertising, “he said. Adrian Nicholas, who currently resides in Miami (USA).

That is why he moved to Los Angeles (USA), that city that surrounds the famous neighborhood of Hollywood, where the Lima musician applied for a year-long film music composition course. Weeks before graduation, after working in different positions that had nothing to do with music, he entered as an intern at a music production company focused on advertising and trailers. And so began his career in the industry.

The industry from within

There is, on the one hand, the film music industry and, on the other, the film advertising industry. In the latter you will find Adrian Nicholas Valdez, who to date has his own company, called ANV Music, and has also been behind the music of various advances such as “Mulan” (Disney), “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” (Marvel Entertainment), “The old guard ”(Netflix),“ Call of Duty ”(Activision) and“ Godzilla vs. Kong ”.

But how does this industry that works hand in hand with the majors of Hollywood? His work begins when the film studio contacts the companies dedicated to making trailers to start the advertising campaign for a film that is in post-production. “These companies join us, because they only make video and they need music (…) We make the music that the client’s client wants,” he explained. Nicholas Valdez.

Thus, the composition process can take two paths, depending on what the studio or the filmmaker requires. “Many times, the film director asks for a specific song. So we take that theme and make it more cinematic. That happened with the movie ‘Godzilla vs. Kong ‘, who asked us to make a cinematic version of a hip hop song at the request of the Warner Bros. producers, “commented the composer.

At other times, studios require original music. Then, Adrian Nicholas Valdez He stated that he follows the guidelines of a script. “In a horror movie, for example, they want the music to be kind of ambient, with violins, and kind of classical that sounds like ‘Psycho’ … they give you a detailed description of what they want,” he said. And he pointed out that the composers are not shown the scenes of the productions. “Only those in the video have them, because the content is very confidential. Sometimes they don’t even give us the name of the film ”, he said.

Once Adrian Nicholas Valdez composes the musical piece, sends the mastered and mixed product to the trailer editor for inclusion in the selected images. And the final video reaches YouTube and other platforms so that we, the viewers, convince ourselves if we run to the cinema or in the service of streaming where they will premiere that movie.
