Ho Chi Minh City Leads Southeast Asia in Electric Bus Revolution – 613 Strong & Growing!
Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam – In a bold move towards lasting urban mobility, ho Chi Minh City has dramatically expanded its electric bus fleet, adding 27 new modern e-buses on August 1st. This latest addition brings the city’s total to an impressive 613 electric buses – now representing over 26.2% of the entire city bus network,a notable leap from just 7% before the initiative.
This massive investment, totaling 443 new e-buses purchased from Phuong Trang – Futa bus Lines, marks the largest electrification project in the city’s public transportation history. But the city isn’t stopping there.Ho Chi minh City has committed to a complete transition to a sustainable bus fleet by 2030, with roughly half of all buses already operating on emission-free power.
More Than Just Green: A Smarter Ride
These aren’t your average buses. The new e-buses are equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the passenger experience. Features include GPS tracking, interior security cameras, free WiFi access, automatic route announcements, and convenient cashless payment systems. The buses offer seating for 30 to 60 passengers, depending on the route.
“The new network offers passengers more comfort and better air quality,” stated a spokesperson for Phuong Trang Passenger Transport JSC. “At the same time, we lower noise and CO emissions in the densely populated districts.”
A City-Wide “Green mobility” Plan
The e-bus expansion is a key component of a broader “Green Mobility” master plan. The city is tackling emissions from all vehicles, aiming to replace 400,000 gasoline-powered motorcycles – the dominant form of transportation in Vietnam – with electric two-wheelers by 2030. A draft law is already in motion to prohibit new gasoline motorcycles for delivery and ride-hailing services starting next year.
To support this transition, Ho Chi Minh City is aggressively building out its charging infrastructure, with plans for 19 central charging stations for electric cars and over 3,000 battery swapping and charging points for electric motorcycles already underway or completed.
Vietnam Sets Aspiring Climate Goals
Ho chi Minh City’s ambitious plans align with Vietnam’s national climate goals, which aim for a significant reduction in emissions and a climate-neutral economy by 2050. The city is positioning itself as a leading example for other major cities across Southeast Asia, demonstrating a viable path towards sustainable urban transportation.
The changes happening on the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City could very well become a blueprint for a greener future throughout the region. The shift to electric mobility is gaining momentum, and Ho Chi Minh City is leading the charge.
