HMPV: The Unknown Respiratory Virus Causing Concern for Young Children and the Elderly

Respiratory viruses spread very widely during the past winter, and RSV, influenza, and Covid 19 mutations dominated greatly. But after they had begun to fade, a largely unknown virus appeared and caused the same symptoms: lower lung inflammation, intermittent coughing, runny nose, sore throat, and fever.. .

And the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Respiratory Virus Surveillance Systems reported an increase in cases of human metagenomevirus, or HMPV, this spring.

This virus has caused intensive care units in hospitals to fill with young children and the elderly, who are considered more vulnerable to this infection.

During its peak in mid-March, nearly 11 percent of samples tested were positive for HMPV, a number about 36 percent higher than the average, CNN reported.

An indication that the majority of people who met this infection did not even know that they had contracted it, especially since those infected with this virus do not undergo tests that reveal infection outside the hospital or intensive care.

Unlike influenza and Covid-19, there is no vaccine or anti-treatment drug for HMPV, and this prompts doctors to take care of infected patients by treating symptoms.

A 2020 study in The Lancet Global Health estimated that among children under the age of 5, there were more than 14 million HMPV infections in 2018, more than 600,000 hospitalizations and more than 16,000 deaths.

And companies are working on vaccines against it. COVID-19 vaccine maker Moderna just completed an early study of its mRNA vaccine against HMPV and its influenza counterpart, according to clinicaltrials.gov.
