H&M showed Looop clothes recycling machine – customers can get a new item from an old one in 5 hours.

The company wants to show customers the recycling process and motivate them to bring in old clothes.

H&M introduced the Looop textile recycling machine – it makes new clothes from old clothes in five hours, writes Fast Company.

The company installed a glass box the size of a shipping container in a Stockholm store. Inside it, workers use Looop to clean clothes, shred them and weave yarn from the resulting fiber. Recycling takes about five hours, at the exit, customers receive a new item from the old materials.

Looop does not use water or chemicals. The recycling process has a lower environmental impact than making clothes from virgin materials.

Customers will have to pay extra for new clothes: for members of the H&M loyalty program, it will cost $ 11, for the rest – for $ 16. All proceeds will go to research materials, the newspaper notes.

The idea of the program is to show customers the recycling process and to motivate them to bring in old clothes, said Pascal Brun, head of sustainability at the company. The machine is not suitable for industrial scale recycling.

In April 2019, the H&M Group invested to Finnish green startup Infinited Fiber. The company’s technology allows you to shred biological fibers such as cotton or rayon and then recreate the fibers into a new material that looks and feels like cotton.
