Historical: Sarah Fuller makes football history

Sarah Fuller became the first woman to score in top men’s college football. The soccer goalkeeper, who was brought in as a temporary worker, is now part of the men’s squad.

She is actually a goalkeeper for the football team at Vanderbilt University, but Sarah Fuller is now playing for the Vanderbilt Commodores in football, making history. The 21-year-old was the first woman to score in a game of the five strongest college leagues in the United States. Fuller scored two extra points after touchdowns in a 17:42 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.

“The whole time it was about whether I can do it, whether I’m good enough,” said Fuller after the game. She later wrote on Twitter: “To be honest, it was the Harry Potter socks.”

At the end of November, when she kicked off the second half of the game at the Missouri Tigers, she caused a historic moment – the medical student was the first woman to play in a top college football game.

Fuller was given a spot on the team after a number of players were quarantined due to coronavirus infections. But even after their return, Fuller stayed in the squad. At the last home game of the season she was now one of three kickers in the squad. In the end, she was allowed to try the two extra points.

Interim coach Todd Fitch said after the game that Fuller is safest from close range. “It’s very accurate in this part of the field. It wasn’t about doing something special, it was really about who got the most kicks in training. “
