Sentenced to 30 years in prison, R. Kelly tries everything. StThe lawyers have in fact asked for a review of the trial that put the singer behind bars. His legal team is trying to overturn the fallen star’s convictions for his sex crimes. According to Chicago TribuneThe “I Believe I Can Fly” singer’s attorneys have filed two motions in federal court in Chicago asking for a new trial or the overturning of his previous convictions for sexual abuse and child pornography. They will be considered in an appellate hearing before the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s lead attorney, sought her client’s acquittal due to “technical factors,” including prosecutors failing to prove that the sex tape Kelly abused “Jane” at her home was was made with the “purpose of producing child pornography”. Additionally, Bonjean argued that there was insufficient evidence that this sex tape crossed state lines, which prosecutors had to prove in court and failed to do. According to the singer’s lawyer, they also failed to prove that R. Kelly “forced” teenage girls to have sex with him.
Bonjean’s second motion calls for a new trial accusing Dr. Darrel Turner, who testified as an expert witness, of making false statements at trial :
“Had jurors known that Dr. Turner actively misled them, jurors likely would have dismissed his evidence out of hand.”
Prosecutors have about a month to respond to Bonjean’s requests.
After being found guilty of nine counts of racketeering and sex trafficking during his trial in September 2021, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly in June.
