Chris Hipkins is expected to be the new Prime Minister of New Zealand. He is the only person to run for leadership of the Social Democrats, New Zealand’s largest party.

The 44-year-old Hipkins is now a minister and has education and the police in his portfolio. He previously served as Minister for Corona Affairs. The party faction will vote on his appointment on Sunday, but that seems like a formality.

Empathetic

Current Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced last week that she will stop next month. The 42-year-old prime minister says she no longer has enough energy to properly perform her duties.

Her departure comes as a shock to the country. Although her popularity has declined somewhat recently, the prime minister has been praised for her empathy and perseverance, including in tackling the corona crisis.
