‘Hindus from The Hague die twice as often from corona’

Indo-Surinamese in The Hague die twice as often from corona than infected people in other groups. This may have to do with the fact that obesity and diabetes are very common in this group. The Algemeen Dagblad writes this today.

“That (obesity and diabetes) is the factor that makes the course of the disease less favorable once you are infected,” says professor of social medicine at the Amsterdam UMC Karien Stronks against the newspaper.

Hindustani Surinamese were not much more likely to be infected with corona than the Dutch during the first wave, but if they are infected the consequences are more serious: among this group the chance of hospitalization and the chance of death is higher, according to Stronks.
