Heavy snow showers have caused traffic and power outages in the northeastern United States. More than half a meter of snow fell in the states of New York and Massachusetts yesterday. In that first state, two people were killed by the storm.

According to the American news channel NBC, a snowblower found a woman dead in her car on Long Island, which is part of New York. The other victim is a man who fell into a swimming pool while clearing snow.

According to the news channel, both cases involve two elderly New Yorkers. The city urges residents to only go out when necessary.

In other states, winter weather is also causing problems. More than 95,000 homes in Massachusetts are without power.

The severe winter weather was expected. A state of emergency had been declared in five states because it would be the heaviest snowfall in years.

The cold is also reaching Florida, where it could drop to six degrees below freezing, according to the NWS National Weather Agency.

The NWS warns iguanas could fall from trees in Florida as they cripple because of the cold:

Air traffic is also affected by the extreme winter weather. Thousands of flights in New York and New Jersey, among other places, have been cancelled.
