A courageous hiker from Rhode Island thwarted a ruthless attack by a rabid coyote using only his bare hands.

The incident occurred on a sunny afternoon in a wooded area of Johnston. According to local media reports, the hiker was suddenly confronted by the aggressive animal which bit him on the leg. The hiker, whose identity remains undisclosed, skillfully took control of the coyote by overpowering it with a firm grip around its neck. The determined hiker suffocated the coyote to death, thus saving his own life.

The Threat of Rabies

The outcome of the incident chillingly highlights the ongoing concern related to rabies transmission from wild animals. In this particular case, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s lab determined that the coyote was rabid. It was later discovered that the same coyote was involved in another attack on a dog walker a week prior.

Rabies, a viral disease found in the saliva of infected animals, poses a serious risk to humans. Contracting rabies without prompt medical treatment is almost always fatal. However, a small number of individuals have survived with immediate intervention. Treatment includes a series of shots to prevent the infection or administration of rabies vaccines as a preventive measure.

Contacting the Authorities

State Veterinarian Scott Marshall of Rhode Island strongly advises individuals who may have come into contact with the coyote to promptly report the incident to the state’s infectious disease department. Additionally, pet owners should reach out to local animal control if their pets were exposed to the animal.
