“High risk”: Alert about mysterious traffic of oriental seeds to Chile

He Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) indicated to the population that they should not open or sow packages of “suspicious” seeds that are arriving in Chile from abroad without being requested, something that is also happening in countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other regions.

The Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, explained that the SAG “has received a series of complaints of parcels containing seeds from abroad that have not been requested by the people” and that “In the first half of 2020 alone, about 8,000 packages of them have been intercepted and destroyed.”

Alerted that “This is very serious since these seeds can destroy native plants or severely damage crops “and, in this sense, the ministry is taking” all measures “to prevent their entry.

Walker and the SAG National Director, Horacio Borquez, thus urged limit contact with these packages and inform the agricultural authorities of the country.

Ask Avoid opening outer packaging or shipping materials, as well as disposing of the package in the trash or releasing it into the environment.

This situation has “a high health risk, as We do not know what species the seeds correspond to or if they could contain diseases or some plague that it is not present in Chile and that later it could affect our agriculture, “said Bórquez.

In case of receiving this type of order, they should contact the Agricultural and Livestock Service at 22 3451100 or write to [email protected].
