Staying fit while keeping an eye on the budget: These are the best alternatives to the expensive gym subscription.

Whether as a New Year’s project or preparation for summer: In the first half of the year, many people become more interested in exercise. Gyms are often the first port of call – but they are usually expensive. Especially with a view to the energy crisis and inflation, a gym membership is not in the budget for many people. That doesn’t mean you have to give up physical fitness though: there are many ways to stay fit without spending a fortune.

In the fresh air

Exercising in the fresh air doesn’t cost a penny. One option is jogging or Nordic walking. If you don’t want to be alone, you can join a running group. Swimming in public waters is also mostly free. In addition, many city parks have public ping-pong tables, basketball courts, and even outdoor gyms that are free to use. In many places there are also free initiatives for outdoor sports, such as yoga or other group workouts.

Free offers in sports clubs

But indoor sports don’t have to cost anything either. Many sports clubs offer free activities. An overview of the clubs with free sports offers in the area is available from the sports offices of the city or municipality or with the initiative “VereinsLeben”. Sports such as handball, football, track and field or group courses such as yoga and Pilates are often free of charge or for a small membership fee.

fitness apps or online videos

There are now numerous free sports offers online that you can easily use at home. Platforms like YouTube offer endless fitness videos – from yoga to HIIT workouts. In addition, there are a variety of free fitness apps or websites, some of which can even be used to create a personalized training program.
