Hid three days in a car in Viana after killing ex-wife in Amarante

The man accused of killing his ex-partner and her boyfriend in May 2019 in Amarante admitted today that he had shot a shotgun at the male victim, but said he did not remember a second shot. He also confessed that he went straight away, “not sure why”, to Viana do Castelo, where for “two or three days” he slept in a car.

“I remember shooting and nothing else,” he told the Penafiel court, where he began to stand trial, stressing that he had no memory of a second shot that, according to the prosecution, was made by the defendant and victimized his ex-partner, called Sónia.

“I only learned of death [dela] when I heard it on the radio, in the car, ”he added.

The 48-year-old man, who owns a tire workshop in Felgueiras, is currently in preventive detention, told the collective of judges today his version of the facts that occurred on May 28 last year, next to a pastry shop in São Paulo. Gens, Amarante.

The defendant indicated that on the day of the crime he left home with the intention of committing suicide, after his ex-partner, with whom he had an extramarital relationship, started to go out with another man.

He told the court that the relationship with Sónia had lasted for nine years, resulting in a three-year-old son. A few weeks before the crime, he continued, the ex-partner began to avoid contact with the accused and to prevent him, “without explanation”, from seeing their son.

“It was not okay to lose my son more and more,” he commented.

With disgust, he said, he decided to end his life, moving, armed, towards a park in Amarante. Halfway there, when he was passing by S. Gens, he saw Sónia’s car parked and decided to stop to, he referred to the court, “try to see his son for the last time”, thinking that the woman would be in a pastry shop.

“I never had the idea of harming anyone,” he said.

Parking his vehicle at the establishment, he waited for the woman to leave, which did not happen.

A few minutes later he saw a car arriving where Sónia and her new companion were.

“I was [dentro do meu carro] out of control, looking at them, ”he exclaimed.

The defendant emphasized that the two victims noticed his presence at the scene and that Sónia’s alleged new boyfriend insulted him twice, showing gestures with his fingers.

“I was disturbed and shot him,” he said, stressing that he was, at that moment, “blind and lost”. The shot was made outside his car, about 10 meters from the vehicle where the couple was, he said.

To the collective, he insisted that he remember nothing else and that, from that day, he only remembers the moment when he went to his workshop, in Longra, Felgueiras, where he changed his car and left towards Paredes, where he had a house, with the intention of committing suicide.

On the way, over the phone, he told a son and his wife that he had just done “blunder” and “done harm to a person”.

In Paredes, he abandoned the idea of killing himself, because he remembered his family, and went on to Porto and then Viana do Castelo, “not really knowing why”, where he spent two to three days, sleeping in the car, next to the road.

He ended up returning to Felgueiras with the intention of talking to a friend who advised him, during the night, to surrender to the authorities. The following morning, leaving his friend’s house with the intention of going to Porto to surrender, he was arrested a few minutes later, when he was in the car, by agents of the Judiciary Police, near the friend’s house.

In the end, when he answered one of the lawyers, he cried, saying he felt “a criminal”.

“I will never forgive myself,” he concluded, underlining his love for the son he shared with Sónia, who, he regretted, was never able to see again.

The trial will continue later today and Friday with the hearing of witnesses listed by the prosecution, beginning with PJ agents.
