Hessen sends 170 disaster relief workers to Greece

Wiesbaden / Hösbach (dpa) – Almost 170 disaster relief workers from Hesse are supposed to help fight the serious forest fires in Greece. According to the Wiesbaden Interior Ministry, they set out on Monday with their 35 vehicles from the Franconian Hösbach near Aschaffenburg to the Attica region. They are expected there on Thursday.

State Secretary Stefan Heck from the Hessian Ministry of the Interior praised the commitment as a testimony to “lived European solidarity”. “As a highly specialized team, you are a figurehead for Germany in the crisis region and, through your willingness, you strengthen our country’s international reputation in the world,” he praised. An advance command had flown into the operational area as early as that morning.

In total, the Hessian aid contingent consists of 168 members of the municipal fire brigades and aid organizations. According to the information, the helpers come from Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and the Darmstadt-Dieburg, Offenbach, Main-Kinzig, Wetterau and Odenwald districts. According to the ministry, the costs for this are borne by the federal government, the transport costs are borne by the European Union. In addition to the Hessian helpers, 50 disaster relief workers from Bonn and technical aid workers from Germany are also being sent to Greece. Greece had made a corresponding request for assistance.
