Hesse,Germany - Residents of Hesse are facing increasing difficulty accessing essential medications,a situation mirroring a growing national crisis. Shortages are impacting a wide range of drugs, from common antibiotics and pain relievers to critical treatments for conditions like ADHD, Type 1 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Holger Seyfarth, Chairman of the Hessian Pharmacist Association, warned that the problem isn’t new. “Almost every indication group is experiencing medication shortages somewhere,” he stated, adding that pharmacists are routinely forced to disappoint patients and expend significant effort to source necessary prescriptions.
The issue extends far beyond Hesse. Thomas Prize, President of the Federal Association of German Pharmacists’ Associations, recently cautioned that the supply of hundreds of drugs is at risk. Over 500 medications are currently listed as having limited availability, with some reaching a critical “lack of care” status.
The root of the problem, experts say, lies in Germany’s increasing reliance on pharmaceutical production outside of Europe, notably in China and India. “Germany used to be the pharmacy of the world,” Prize explained, “now the pharmacy of the world is in China or India.
