Herzog & de Meuron build the first Swiss motorway church

The preliminary project for the motorway church on the San Bernardino route was presented on Wednesday in the mountain village of Andeer. It essentially consists of a church which is visible from afar and which is connected to an underground sequence of rooms. The two regional churches support the project.

In contrast to neighboring countries – there are 46 in Germany – Switzerland has no motorway churches. The only spiritual building on a Swiss motorway is a motorway chapel, which is located in Erstfeld in the canton of Uri on the A2.

The first Swiss motorway church in Graubünden is said to be clearly visible on a hill adjacent to the A13 in Andeer. It should be reached after a short walk. The community of interests (IG) Autobahnkirche Andeer – Val Schons is behind the project. She hopes this extraordinary project will improve the connection situation more quickly.

Shell construction until the end of 2022

This project, which is unique in the Viamala region, is to be financed on a private basis. The donated funds should flow into a foundation, the sole purpose of which is the establishment and operation of the Autobahnkirche.

The initiators want to have the shell completed by the end of 2022. This is also the anniversary year of the «Commercialstrasse in Thusis», an important event in connection with the history of transit and maid service in the region.
