Summer is a time to indulge in creative expressions inspired by nature. Artists and art enthusiasts meet in art plein airs in picturesque places in Latvia. The Kandava Art Plein Air is taking place for the eighth time this summer. Local people appreciate this initiative, as new art objects are added to the urban environment.
In the old flowers of Kandava’s old town, people sitting behind easels attract the attention of passers-by. In the very center, on the bench, the clay pots dry in the sun. The annual Art Plein Air “Creative Art Moment” has started in Kandava, which has been organized by the ceramicist Linda Priedniece for the eighth year. This is special in that those interested are invited to bring children as well.
“How to make the city get more. I invited not only professional painters, but also artists and art lovers in general, as well as people who sit in the office every day and are longing for something creative, ”explains Linda Priedniece.
Twenty-eight representatives of different ages and professions from all over Latvia will try their hand at creativity in ceramics, painting, letterpress printing, mosaic technique and clothing revival throughout the week. The narrow streets of Kandava Old Town are especially popular with those who participate in the painting workshop in the open air.
“That’s all the magic – suddenly start painting seriously. What is taught during school, here all of a sudden you can do everything in such a free and relaxed atmosphere.
At a pace as the light changes. Catch light and shadow. You can live here all your life and paint and paint, ”says painter Egils Neihofers.
Danuta Ābele, a participant of the plein air, notes: “I really like the feeling that arises when painting. I even get adrenaline and stress in a positive sense. ”
In the pottery workshop, potter Laura Matilde Ikerte invites you to learn the first skills in the profession of smoked black pottery.
“We mostly work with glued ceramics, because it is really the oldest technology found in the world,” explains Laura Matilde Ikerte.
“I am pleased to see that even the first time people touch the clay, they get a wonderful result.”
Both the experienced participants of the annual plein air and those who make their first bowl out of a lump of clay allow the clay to attract them to the workshop.
“I am here with my little sister for the second year. It is very interesting to try to create something yourself. An interesting feeling when you have done something, that you are finishing something. Very pleasant, ”says the plein air participant Aleksandrs Klāvs Kolmanis.
Every year, during the Kandava Art Plein Air, a work of art that remains in the urban environment is created together. This year, the participants of the plein air will present a large-format painting to the Kandava bus station. But at the end of the plein air, an open-air exhibition is planned from the works created during that time.
