Here are the five steps for dealing with dengue fever according to the Professor of UI

Professor of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama suggests five steps for treating dengue fever in the community, one of which is applying the 3M plus approach.

“Preventing mosquitoes from living and breeding, including using the 3M plus approach,” said the Director of Postgraduate Program at YARSI University to ANTARA, Monday.

The 3M approach is to drain places that often become water reservoirs such as bathtubs, jugs, water towers and other water reservoirs; sealing water reservoirs; as well as reusing used waste that has the potential to become a breeding ground for dengue fever mosquitoes.

While the pluses are additional prevention efforts such as raising mosquito larvae-eating fish, using mosquito repellents, installing wire screens on windows and ventilation, placing used clothing in closed containers and planting mosquito repellent plants.

Prof. Tjandra, who once served as Director General of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health, also advised the public to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever, for example by applying mosquito repellent.

“It takes the active involvement of the community, including continuous outreach and education to the community,” he said.

According to him, dengue virus surveillance and mosquito (vector) surveillance also need to be carried out strictly. This, he continued, should be carried out together with clinical and environmental surveillance so that integrated surveillance is formed.

On the other hand, added Prof. Tjandra, health services must run well so that hospitals are full when cases are high and patients are not being helped, it doesn’t happen.

“In addition to these five things, various new technologies are also being developed, for example the dengue vaccine, or the breeding of Wolbachia mosquitoes,” he said.
