Hérault: the parking lots on the Petit and Grand Travers beaches will remain free this summer

After consultation between the various stakeholders in the file, parking will ultimately not be chargeable on these two sites with 1,300 spaces. But could be in 2022.

The news should delight many Montpellier residents: the Petit and Grand Travers car parks will ultimately remain free this summer. As we had indicated in our previous editions, the Conservatoire du littoral, owner of the Petit Travers, had serious reservations about the decision of the municipality of Mauguio-Carnon to make the 1,000 spaces in this car park chargeable.

A tripartite agreement

Indeed, until now, the place was the subject of an agreement between the Conservatoire du littoral and the agglomeration of the Pays de l’Or. For parking to become chargeable, the agreement must become tripartite and bring together the signatures of the Pays de l’Or, Mauguio-Carnon and the Conservatoire du littoral.

“We met the Agglo and the municipality on Wednesday 5 May and we agreed on the fact that it was difficult to envisage paying parking this summer”, indicates Cédric Bohun, Languedoc-Roussillon shore delegate at the Conservatoire du littoral.

The town hall of Mauguio-Carnon confirms that“given the ongoing talks with the Conservatory and given the constraints of setting up equipment for the 1is June, the parking spaces at the Lido will remain free this summer “.

“We are around the table again”

“The municipality wanted to speed things up, but a little too much. We are all around the table again to study all the possibilities”, announces Cédric Bohun, aware that the maintenance of the site remains the responsibility of the municipality (approximately 200,000 € per year).

Good that “The stated objective of the Conservatoire du littoral is to keep it free as long as possible”, underlines the latter, the establishment is not opposed to the establishment of a tariff for parking on this very frequented natural site either. “This could discourage motorized use but it could also cause parking to be postponed to other places … We must take the time to think about all the consequences of this decision. “, concludes Cédric Bohun.

“Paying for the 2022 season”

The idea is therefore not buried, far from it. “The introduction of paid parking could be effective for the 2022 season at a rate of € 2 per day”, already announces the town hall of Mauguio-Carnon.

By domino effect, the neighboring town of La Grande-Motte had decided to charge for parking in the Grand Travers car park for “avoid vehicle spillage on these 300 spaces, indicates the mayor of the city, Stéphan Rossignol. But if it is no longer paying at the Petit Travers, it will not be paying at the Grand Travers this summer either. “

The ten parking meters that were to be installed soon in this area will therefore remain in the closet for the moment, biding their time.

More than 12,500 signatures against paid parking

The city council’s decision to make parking at the Petit Travers chargeable had not gone unnoticed, far from it. Daniel Bourguet, elected opposition mayor of Mauguio-Carnon, had launched a petition to oppose it. It had more than 12,500 signatures this Thursday evening. Maintaining free access to the beach, “it’s a matter of principle. From Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone to La Grande-Motte, there will no longer be free access. I find that shocking,” he said in our columns.

An opinion that seemed to share the Conservatoire du littoral which assured “that free and open access to the public domain on the coast” was part of its DNA. Although the cards are reshuffled, it is only part reshuffling. Belote and rebelote, the debate will once again fall on the table after the summer of 2021. Certainly.
