Hennebont. Gwénaël Dréan takes us to New York

Physiotherapist-osteopath at Hennebont (Morbihan), Gwénaël Dréan is also an amateur photographer. It clicked five years ago: “I took some lessons with a friend, a professional photographer. I really enjoyed discovering this universe and I caught the photography bug, he explains. I really like to take portraits, but especially the spontaneity in the photo. This freezes forever for a moment T. “ His new passion is combined with another: urban arts. In the summer of 2019, he published a book, Street Art Lorient and its country, in which a large place is given to photos of these ephemeral works.

A few months later, he flew to New York. As often on returning from a trip, the physiotherapist returns with the luggage full of pictorial memories, where “A little poetry emerges. “ The idea of an exhibition begins to emerge. So, he made an appointment with Claudine Corpart, assistant delegate for culture. “I had brought a few prints. She suggested that I exhibit at the socio-cultural center, for my greatest pleasure. “

An unexpected look

About fifteen of his works on the theme of New York are currently on display at the Jean-Ferrat socio-cultural center. Through his photos, Gwénaël Dréan sought to show different points of view, “Far from the usual clichés”, even if we find emblematic places: Radio City Music Hall, Manhattan Bridge or Central Park under the snow. During Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, during which giant balloons parade through the streets, he did not hesitate to adopt an original angle. “I climbed on the roof of a New York police van”, he recalls. The winter light offers him an unusual landscape of Coney Island, a peninsula usually very popular with New Yorkers.

The seafront, the fairgrounds, everything is almost deserted and a certain nostalgia emerges from his photos. In the works on display, color dominates. Gwénaël Dréan does not touch up almost anything, “Apart from correction and exposure. “

After the socio-cultural center, the exhibition should brighten up the corridors of the Scorff hospital in Lorient. In the meantime, Gwénaël Dréan keeps his camera close at hand. “I’m impatiently waiting for life to resume, to explore some of the major European cities. “

Until February 28, at the Jean-Ferrat socio-cultural center, in Hennebont. Free entrance.
