Héma-Québec, annual blood drive – The initiative

Despite the pandemic and the winter, Héma-Québec invites blood donors to remain mobilized for those who need their generosity to recover their health.

The 2021 edition of Black History Month is an opportunity for Héma-Québec to highlight the essential contribution of blood donors from black communities. The latter are particularly affected by sickle cell anemia, an inherited blood disease whose treatment may require many transfusions at frequent intervals.

One of the treatments for the disease consists, in fact, of carrying out blood exchanges (erythrapheresis) in order to remove the red blood cells from the affected person by those from healthy donors. This procedure usually takes place every 4 weeks and requires blood cells from 10 different donors. On an annual basis, an average person with sickle cell disease will need blood from 130 different donors.

But the challenge is even greater when we consider that people who receive transfusions on a frequent basis are at risk of developing antibodies that result in adverse reactions during the transfusion. To reduce these adverse reactions, it is shown that a donor and a recipient with a similar genetic background is a solution.

The mobilization of donors from black communities thus makes a big difference in the quality of life of people with sickle cell anemia requiring frequent transfusions.

It is necessary to make an appointment before going to the clinic, by contacting 1 800 343-7264 (SANG) or by writing to [email protected].

It is possible to plan a donation now at the blood drive organized by the Black History Month Roundtable, which will be held throughout February in three Héma-Québec GLOBULE donor centers:
• Globule Versailles | 7275 Sherbrooke Street East in Montreal (Radisson metro)
• Globule Laval | 1600, boulevard le Corbusier in Laval (Center Laval – entrance 4)
• Dix30 globule | 9370, boulevard Leduc (local 30) in Brossard

Mention the code MMCNO when making your appointment so that we can count the number of donors registered during Black History Month.

Join us for this important cause, be many to make an appointment! 1,000 blood donations are needed every day to ensure an optimal level of reserves, even in times of pandemic.
Héma-Québec is doing everything it can to continue to make donation a safe experience. Numerous measures on all collection sites, in particular controls on access to collection sites with temperature measurement of donors and volunteers, additional disinfection measures and a revised logistical organization of collections in order to comply with the measures of distancing.

Who can donate blood?
Anyone in good health, 18 years of age or older, can usually donate blood. Before going to a blood drive, you can check your eligibility with Donor Client Services at 1 800 847-2525 or consult the Can I donate section? from the Héma-Québec website.
