Heliocentric Theory and Geocentric Theory in the Solar System, What’s the Difference?

Jakartaheliocentric theory is a theory that states that the sun is the center of the solar system and the earth moves around it in a circular orbit. This theory is considered one of the most important discoveries of all time.

It is even considered a fundamental starting point for modern astronomy and modern science, as quoted from the book entitled Man and History: An Overview of Philosophy by Yulia Siska.

For orbit problems, the data obtained by Copernicus showed indications of deviations in the angular velocities of the orbits of the planets. However, he maintained the circular shape of the orbit by stating that the orbits were not concentric.

heliocentric theory Copernicus stated in his publication entitled The orbits of celestial Revolutonibus. However, this theory was rejected by the church’s views and considered dangerous.

According to the book Mental Education Towards National Character by Imam Sibaweh, Copernicus’ writings were also forbidden to be published until 1543 or the year he died.

This theory was rejected by the church because it was considered contrary to the previous views expressed by the famous philosopher, Aristotle, who supported the geocentric theory.

Scientist Galileo Galilei who was interested in heliocentric theory also proved this theory. Through his book entitled Astronomical Dialogue, Galileo led the reader to believe that the sun was the center of the solar system.

Quoted from Sang-wook Park in his book entitled Why? Scientific Events, Galileo has proven it with telescope research. The reason for his statement is because he saw changes in black spots on the sun, satellites (moons) orbiting Jupiter, and changes in the phase of Venus, which is like the moon.

This phase change of venus is indicated by Venus appearing smaller as it approaches a round shape. Because Venus is in the furthest distance from the earth when Venus, the sun, and the Earth are in a straight line.

On the other hand, Venus looks its largest when it is crescent-shaped. The phase changes of Venus that have been studied prove that Venus is in front of the earth and together also revolves around the sun. Until in the end, the theory that the sun is the center of the solar system is what is used today.

Teori Geosentris

Before appearing heliocentric theory, the earliest theory that emerged related to our solar system was the geocentric theory.

This theory was put forward by an expert from Greece named Claudius Ptolemy. The geocentric theory states that all objects in our solar system move relative to the earth.

In other words, according to the geocentric theory, the earth is the center of the solar system. This theory was even believed for nearly 1400 years. Because, if we pay attention to the celestial bodies around us, these objects appear to be moving around the earth.

That’s why this theory is also supported by other scientists such as, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Tales, Anaximander, and Pythagoras.

Until later found a weakness in the geocentric theory, namely this theory cannot explain the sun and moon moving in a circular trail around the earth, but the planet moves irregularly in a series of vertices to the east.

Well, detikers now understand the difference between heliocentric theory and geocentric, isn’t it?
