Heavy rains and hurricane force winds for NYC and the region; Snow in Some Sectors – NBC New York (47)

A storm system hurtling toward the East Coast will pummel New York City and the entire region with heavy rains with the potential to cause localized flooding and gale-force winds with the power to down trees and power lines.

The effects of the coastal storm began to be felt early Monday afternoon in parts of Appalachia as snow began to spread across parts of Pennsylvania.

Temperatures in New York City are cooler than they have been in recent days, but are not expected to drop below 44 degrees. However, all five boroughs are expected to experience heavy rain that will last through Tuesday.

The strongest parts of the storm are expected to hit the Big Apple between 9 p.m. and midnight. The National Weather Service indicated that rainfall rates of between a quarter and a half inch per hour should be expected during the most significant periods of the storm.

With rainfall totals likely to reach two inches, the agency said flooding can occur in urban, low-lying and poorly drained areas. The National Weather Service’s flood watch is in effect from 10 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Gusty winds are also a threat. Steady winds between 20 and 30 mph are expected along with gusts topping 50 mph, posing a hazard to unsecured objects, tree limbs and power lines, the National Weather Service said.

Vulnerable areas along the coast may experience coastal flooding as a result of the combined effects of the storm and a full moon, according to the National Weather Service. Road closures are a possibility, and the agency advises motorists to avoid driving if possible.

Residents in flood-prone areas should take steps to protect property, officials said.

While the most severe impacts from the storm are expected Monday night, the rain may continue into the early morning hours of Tuesday, forecasts show.

NEW JERSEY

The storm with heavy rain, wind and coastal flooding is also expected to hit New Jersey.

All parts of the state are expected to get up to 1 ½ inches of rain, the National Weather Service said.

Wind gusts will average 25 to 35 mph, with a chance of gusts to 50 mph, the service noted.

The Atlantic Coast, Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and the Delaware River will be affected by minor coastal flooding, with more moderate coastal flooding expected in Cape May County, according to the agency.

Northwestern New Jersey will also see less than an inch of wet snow, according to the weather service.

The storm is expected to last until early Tuesday morning. Temperatures during the storm will go from a high of 50 to a low of 40, the National Weather Service said.

After the storm, the rest of the week will be mostly sunny as temperatures climb into the 60s with a chance of hitting the 70s on Friday, the weather service said.
