The shooting took place around 11:20 p.m. in a park near the victim’s flat on the Valeriusrondel. Neighbors heard at least four explosions.

One of the local residents, she says on Saturday afternoon, saw a car tearing away. The vehicle was traveling so fast that it almost crashed into an elderly resident of the apartment crossing the road. This man also let his four-legged friend out.

The neighbor also reports that the dog of the seriously injured victim, a chow chow, did not want to leave its owner. When the police arrived, the animal initially began to growl at the officers. “He wanted to protect his owner.”

The officers were eventually able to calm the dog and move it. Meanwhile, rescuers found multiple gunshot wounds on the victim. Ambulance staff took the man to hospital, but the help was to no avail: a few hours later, the resident of Capellen succumbed to his injuries.

According to a police spokeswoman, the dog is okay and has been ‘well taken care of’.

For the neighbor, the death of the thirty-something is a shock. Where others describe the victim as ‘withdrawn’, she says that she could laugh with him. ,,He always smelled good and wore nice suits. Then I asked him: how do you manage that? Then he said with a laugh: there must be a difference, huh. He was a kind man.”

Shortly after the police received the report about the shooting, the emergency services were alerted to a burning car – a red Renault Clio – on the Burgemeester van Beresteijnlaan, about eight kilometers away. The investigation team is investigating whether the two incidents are related. According to the police, a witness at the Valeriusrondelle saw a red car drive away.

The cause of the incident is not yet known. The police have not arrested anyone yet. “We keep all scenarios open.”
