Health Ministry confirms African swine fever is different from swine flu

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) emphasized that African swine fever (ASF) is a very different type of virus from swine flu or swine flu (H1N1).

“This ASF is African swine fever (African swine fever). So this is a disease in pigs. Swine flu also actually influenza disease in pigs. “Both of them are in pigs when we talk about aspects of animals,” said Director of the Prevention and Control of Vector and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi in a teleconference through Zoom from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Jakarta, Thursday.

It says good swine flu and ASF are the same diseases that infect pigs. However, the two types of disease basically have many differences.

In African swine fever, Nadia said that this type of disease is only transmitted from sick animals to other animals and has never been proven to be transmitted to humans.

While swine flu has been proven to infect pigs and humans with symptoms characterized by fever, depression and discharge in the nose and eyes.

While in ASF, symptoms are marked by sudden death in pigs, high fever and red on the skin of infected animals.

Transmission of African swine fever occurs through contact with sick animals and objects that have been contaminated with the virus. Whereas in swine flu, transmission causes influenza like illness (ILI) in pigs and is transmitted either directly or indirectly to sick animals.

The difficulty in controlling ASF, said Nadia, is because there is no vaccine for infected animals. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is also still struggling to resolve the problem with the ASF infection.

“So (ASF) is very different from the flu we call swine flu or H1N1 swine flu, where it is indeed an infectious disease in pigs that attack the airways. If ASF attacks more in the digestive tract,” he said.

Meanwhile, besides explaining the difference between ASF and swine flu, Nadia also explained the difference between bird flu, seasonal flu and pandemic flu.

He said bird flu was an influenza virus caused by the H5N1 virus that started on birds in 2003 and spread to humans.

Until June 2020 the cumulative number of bird flu cases in Indonesia is as many as 200 cases with 168 deaths and the last case occurred in 2017. The bird flu was allegedly able to become a pandemic.

Furthermore, seasonal flu, said Nadia, is the flu that is generally caused by influenza virus type A or B. The flu is mild and can recover if there is no severe accompanying illness, namely by resting and eating healthy nutritious foods.

Meanwhile, the pandemic flu is the flu that causes many deaths in a fast time globally.

One example that was once a pandemic is Influenza A (H1N1) in 2009, which has now become a seasonal influenza.
