In the winter season, the temperature is low in the morning and evening, and sometimes the cold wind creates an icy road. An accident to be aware of at this time is an ice fall. In particular, osteoporosis patients have weak bones, so even minor falls can lead to fractures.

According to statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service on the 15th, 107,9548 patients visited the hospital for osteoporosis in 2019 alone. Females were about 15 times more frequent than male patients, and most of them were in their 50s or older.

Choi Jung-chan, director of the Seoul Western Branch of the Korea Health Care Association, said, “To prevent fractures caused by osteoporosis, we need to measure bone density in advance and pay more attention to falls. In particular, osteoporosis usually has few symptoms, so regular tests are necessary for women after menopause and men over 50.”

“If you lose your balance while walking with your hand in your pocket because it is cold, and fall over, even a minor accident can cause serious injury to osteoporosis patients. To prevent osteoporosis, it is important to avoid smoking and excessive drinking, exercise regularly, and get enough sun to absorb vitamin D.”

Women aged 54 and 66 can receive a bone density test through the National Health Insurance Service’s health checkup.
