Health authorities pronounce on the death of a baby in Havana

The Cuban health authorities ruled on the complaint of a baby who lost his life in Havana due to medical negligence.

Through an official statement, the San Miguel del Padrón Pediatric Hospital, in the capital, acknowledged the death of the minor, however, it did not go into details about the treatment he received or the causes of death.

“The hospital health team regrets the death of the infant, being an infrequent event, but at the same time very painful,” reads the statement shared on the official site of the General Directorate of Public Health in Havana.

The hospital’s Medical Assistance Directorate indicates that the minor was initially treated at the Pediatric Emergency Service, where “relatives in the medical consultation stated that the child had been experiencing respiratory distress for approximately a week.”

After being examined by the doctor, the baby was diagnosed with a wheezing crisis, so it was decided to admit him for study and treatment.

Once there, oxygen therapy, bronchodilator aerosols, and intravenous steroids were applied, to which the patient responded positively.

However, the patient presented a “persistence of high respiratory rate without wheezing, subcostal indrawing”, in the same way, he presented a biological risk due to a personal pathological history, for which reason “it is decided to transfer him to the progressive care service where they are applied continuous actions by the intensive care staff”.

The authorities emphasize that the minor received additional blood and imaging tests, where normal results were obtained. In turn, an X-ray was performed, which did not reveal pulmonary lesions.

After that, the specialist team reassessed him, describing a clinical improvement, but around 10:15 pm, after feeding, the minor suffered a “bronchial-asphyxic event with cyanosis of the lips and limbs,” for which reason he was they performed immediate aspiration care, gastric catatherism.

After presenting a deterioration in the respiratory pattern, the medical team applied artificial ventilation and a “centrovenous catheterization” to apply treatments.

Despite everything, around 01:00 am, an event of “extreme bradycardia, low oxygen saturation, and generalized cyanosis” was recorded, which caused cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers to begin, which did not work.

The authorities indicated that the baby’s death was recorded “at 01:55 am on March 24, 2023.”

Report of death

The death of the minor was denounced on social networks by the father, who assured that several faults were committed when carrying out his treatment.

The man, identified as Marco Miguel Matos Blanco, assured that the doctors administered a large amount of medication to his son, who was only a month and a half old.

In the same way, he pointed out that some of the drugs used were very aggressive, which is why they required the consent of the parents to administer them; however, the medical personnel never approached him to ask for his permission.
