Health Alert: Dominican Republic, COVID-19 Update

Alert – U.S. Embassy Santo Domingo (January 8, 2021)

Location: Dominican Republic

The following information has been updated on the Embassy Santo Domingo COVID-19 website:

Until further notice, U.S. direct hire personnel are prohibited from accessing indoor public or business spaces where mask usage is not required, such as restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.  Staff are also strongly encouraged to avoid any situations where social distancing is not possible.

As noted previously:

From January 1 to January 10, 2021 the Dominican Republic has implemented the following additional requirements:

  • Eating or drinking in bars, restaurants, and other drinking establishments is prohibited (delivery and pickup is permitted)
  • Open air public spaces, including sports locations, are closed, except professional touraments performing without public attendance

Beginning December 31, the government of the Dominican Republic has issued a curfew nationwide.  Failure to follow the curfew, including for U.S. citizens, may result in arrest and/or fines.  Full details on the curfew can be found at https://presidencia.gob.do/

January 1-10 (M-F): Curfew from 5pm to 5am, with a grace period for transit until 7pm each day.

January 1-10 (Sa-Sun): Curfew from 12pm to 5am.

There is a Level 3 Travel Advisory recommending U.S. citizens reconsider travel to the Dominican Republic due to health and safety measures and COVID-19-related conditions.

Actions to Take:

  1. Consult the CDC website for the most up-to-date information and what you can do to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19.
  2. Dial *462 to reach the COVID-19 hotline in the Dominican Republic for specific instructions if you have been exposed or are experiencing severe symptoms.  Note: English-speaking operators are limited.
  3. All U.S. citizens must follow the restrictions put in place by the Government of the Dominican Republic.
  4. Flights remain available to the United States. Check with the airlines directly regarding booking flights.
  5. Have a plan to depart from the Dominican Republic that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.
  6. Visit our Embassy webpage on COVID-19 for information on conditions in the Dominican Republic.
  7. Visit the COVID-19 crisis page on travel.state.gov for the latest travel information and other global impacts.
  8. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

Until further notice, US direct hire personnel are prohibited from accessing indoor public or commercial spaces where the use of masks is not required, such as restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Staff are also strongly advised to avoid situations where social distancing is not possible.

As noted above:

From January 1 to January 10, 2021:

  • Consumption in bars, restaurants, and grocery stores is prohibited
  • Open-air public spaces and other places dedicated to sports practices have been closed (except for professional tournaments without public)

As of December 31, the Government of the Dominican Republic has issued a nationwide curfew. Breaking the curfew, even for US citizens, can result in arrests and / or fines. Full details on the curfew can be found at https://presidencia.gob.do/

January 1-10 (Monday to Friday): curfew from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am, with free transit until 7:00 pm every day.

January 1-10 (Saturdays and Sundays): curfew from 12 pm to 5 am

  6. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Registration Program (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, STEP) to receive alerts and facilitate their location in case of emergency.
