by Adriano Segatori – Once there was talk of “masters” to indicate those significant figures who with word and example became guides in the profession and lifestyles to be imitated.
One of these was, for me, Ennio Demitri, head of the Monfalcone Emergency Department, in the times when – mid-70s – the diagnosis was made with auscultation, palpation and the use of other sensory instruments of nature. He was a cultured man, a profound connoisseur of the First World War, who passed from the specific reading of the arguments to the targeted direct confirmation by hiking on the Karst and going down into the trenches.
One evening, indeed, a late night, after the shift in the hospital, a swim in the moonlight and an abandoned dinner with conspicuous watering, speaking of serious things, he said to me: “I don’t know if I’ll be there, but you will see that one day there will be more and more medical graduates and fewer and fewer doctors“. This ascertained truth has remained engraved in my mind, like the one, always encountered and attributed to Hegel, according to which the “nightmare of Minerva leaves the University when the janitors open the doors”.
Both prophecies have come true. And the first, the one that concerns us, was catalyzed by this epidemic drama.
Doctors, willing to compromise for money and visibility, play the trombones of the regime’s propaganda, align themselves with the toxic power of information, contradict themselves in following heterodirect instructions. Exhibitionists suffering from delirium of omnipotence, peppered with malignant narcissism and indecent megalomania, pass by the most shameful threats (“No vax closed like mice”, Burioni) to the most arrogant offenses (“Montagnier is a stoned with senile dementia ”, Bassetti).
And Bassetti himself is the incarnation of my primary’s prophecy. Without horror of himself, he goes from the exhibition in the tailor shop to the television ranting, in a bad representation of what a white shirt should symbolize. Nolente, or actually consenting, is the pro-vax supporter of the dear Gassman, Amendola, Parenzo, Pupo, Lucarelli, Fedez, Venier, shadows of intelligence, common sense and competence.
It is he, a figure in epidemiology, with his abused authority and who shares the “hunt for non vaccine“(La Repubblica, 7/19/2021), the person responsible for the ridiculous as well as spurious indications for vaccination: from Northern League Mayor of Varallo which gives ten euros to those who get vaccinated, to ice creams for children, to the governor of Friuli-Venezia Giulia who promises freedom to the immunized, to the open day to vaccinate the high school candidates proposed by the Brothers of Italy.
In short, the politicians have ensnared the doctors with oblations and prebends, they have supported the politicians in the operation of health abuse and the domestication of the mass.
But if the former respond to their actions in the electoral sphere, the latter would have a code of ethics to respect and an order to which they must respond.
So far, it seems to me nothing has happened, and therefore a Bassetti remains a negative example for the profession, an influencer of arrogant rudeness, a figure of what from the beginning was a Sacred Art and ended up being a profane avanspectacle.
