Bratislava – Slovak filmmaker Tereza Nvotová anticipates her nominated short film, FatherS Father, will resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level, diverging from typical cinematic portrayals of grief. The film received an Academy Award nomination in the Live Action Short Film category on January 23, 2024.
Nvotová intends for Father’s Father to offer a nuanced exploration of familial relationships and loss, steering clear of sensationalism. “I hope that the father’s father will touch people differently-because it is not about the tragedy and to cry to the cinema,” Nvotová stated. The film centers on a young man grappling with the recent death of his father and his evolving relationship with his stoic grandfather.
The nomination marks a important achievement for Nvotová,whose work often focuses on intimate character studies. Father’s Father premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it garnered critical acclaim for its sensitive direction and compelling performances. The 96th academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The film’s success highlights the growing recognition of Slovak cinema on the international stage.
