“He hardly ever went out, then came that damned pneumonia”

ROVIGO Roberto Baccaglini was 64 years old, he was in perfect health, he was enjoying the years of his well-deserved retirement, together with the beautiful family he had built. Until the unexpected arrival of the Coronavirus when, starting from mid-December, the disease it insinuated itself in a subtle way into the family of Boara Polesine and, again in the home, the infections spread. At first some symptoms, such as the wife, then the situation began to alarm the relatives, up to recovery by Roberto Baccaglini which took place on December 28 atTrecenta hospital. The man in the previous days had already been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, despite the hospital stay the situation seemed under control.
OUT OF THE BLUE
The man from Rovigo had maintained a spirit of initiative, even made himself available to put his elderly roommate in contact with relatives via cell phone. Baccaglini was considered a stable patient: he ate regularly, performed the required exercises. Suddenly, however, that cursed bilateral pneumonia was starting to create more serious damage: the clinical picture has worsened since January 9, when the 64-year-old entered intensive care. Days of distress, until the sad call of the medical staff who announced his death on Monday.
THE FAMILY
It all happened too fast for his wife Elisabetta, children Silvia and Mirko, brothers Luigino, Luisa and Ivana. The words of her daughter Silvia are a warning to people who underestimate the disease: “Dad and mom have always been beware and in recent months they had reduced their expenses. The only contacts maintained were in family environment: despite the attentions, the virus entered our family, it’s nobody’s fault. Mom had accused a few lines of fever and almost simultaneously also dad, the simultaneity triggered the alarm bell: both underwent the test and tested positive. Symptoms such as fever and fatigue increased, the level of saturation began to show deficits, dad was treated at home until December 27, then hospitalization was necessary ». Roberto Baccaglini, at Trecenta, touches the devastating effects of Covid, the father’s words are reported by his daughter: “He saw an unimaginable reality: fear, frenzy, the short time to face an emergency like this: it was like a war”.
The family wants to publicly thank all the medical staff “because everyone is doing their best to solve the emergency.” Roberto Baccaglini was a driver, he had been retired for four years. He devoted himself to family, fishing, local volunteering. “I find it hard to describe in a few words what it was, the love with which he raised our family, the dedication with which he took care of his nephew Alessandro – continues Silvia – He was ready to support any initiative, he collaborated with the parish”. The funeral today at 11 in the church of Boara Polesine. At the end the procession will continue for the cremation in Ferrara.
