Harvey Weinstein transferred to a high security prison north of New York

Fallen producer Harvey Weinstein, sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual assault and rape, was due to be transferred Wednesday, March 18, to a prison in northern New York State.

The sixty-something man has so far been held in the infamous Rikers Island Prison, located in the Queens neighborhood of New York, since his conviction on March 11.

He was due to be extracted on Wednesday and transported to the Wende Correctional Facility, the New York State Prison Service (DOCCS) told Agence France-Presse. This high-security prison is more than 500 km northwest of Manhattan, not far from Buffalo.

Harvey Weinstein is not supposed to stay in this institution, where he will be assessed in order to determine in which prison he will actually serve his sentence.

To determine his next destination, the New York State Prison Service will take into account his state of health, physical and mental, the nature of his crimes and his notoriety. The date of his next transfer is not yet known, the prison services said.

The producer, who will celebrate his 68th birthday on Thursday, has been assigned the registration number 20B0584.
