Jurassic Park is one of the most memorable films in cinema history and its cast gave such outstanding performances that its characters became iconic, including Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm and Richard Attenborough as John Hammond.
Since we currently see these actors and immediately relate them to their characters, it is hard to imagine that other actors came close to playing them, noting that the role of Dr. Grant was originally intended for Harrison Ford, the actor behind such great characters as Han Solo and Indiana. jones.
The CBR site remembers this revelation of Steven Spielberg in 2011, since in a question and answer session for the 30th Anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison Ford joked telling the director that he only hired him to play Indiana Jones, but Spielberg answered him saying, “I have to correct this. Do you know who I pitched Jurassic Park to? This guy. Alan Grant, I pitched it to this guy first.”
It is not clear why Ford turned down the role of Dr. Grant, but that decision made Spielberg consider other actors such as William Hurt, Richard Dreyfuss and Kurt Russell who could not finalize their participation, until it came to Sam Neill to just a few weeks before filming for the movie began.
And this makes us think how different things would have been since Ford being a household name would probably have changed the dynamic of the characters and the way the audience perceived Dr. Grant and the events of the movie, plus they would have drawn comparisons to his role as Indiana Jones.
By the way, the article also mentions that Sean Connery was once considered for the role of John Hammond, that Jim Carrey was close to being Ian Malcolm, and that although Dern was always the first choice for Ellie, if he had not accepted the role role would have gone to Robin Wright.
In short, it seems that things settled in the best way since the cast is unique and they have made a great dynamic together on screen with the Jurassic Park franchise.
