Microsoft has turned the way hardware partners can distribute updated drivers for Windows 10. Like the group via Tech community announces, from now on the partners want to be able to distribute their drivers automatically via Windows Update. The procedure should make it possible to carry out the distribution in stages so that any problems can be discovered at an early stage and any corrections made. In addition to this automatic distribution, hardware partners also have the option of marking drivers as optional, which means that the installation must then be initiated by the user.
As Microsoft confirmed in the comments to the article, the new driver distribution model is available for the first time with the Windows 10 version 2004 expected in spring. Older versions of Windows should not be supported and drivers are still provided via the device manager.
