Hard fall! World champion Van Vleuten broke her wrist on Gira

Annemiek van Vleuten, the defending champion in the mass start race, will be missing at the World Road Cycling Championships next week in Imola. After falling in the seventh stage on Thursday, the Dutch rider had to withdraw from the Giro d’Italia race, which she had been leading so far, due to a broken wrist.

“I am very sad that I can no longer defend the pink jersey, but I am even more sorry that I will lose the World Cup on a track that would suit me,” said Van Vleuten, who is awaiting the operation after returning to the Netherlands. She suffered injuries after a collision with her Mitchelton-Scott teammate Amanda Spratt and another Dutch star Marianne Vos.

Polka Katarzyna Niewiadomá led the Gira, which will end on Saturday. Twenty-year-old Czech cyclist Markéta Hájková is in 66th place.
