Hamilton signs lucrative new deal with Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of this season. All the coveted spots in Formula 1 have already been taken before 2021, so it is generally assumed that Hamilton’s addition to Mercedes is only a matter of time. A big issue was and is how much Hamilton will then have left over from his top salary.

Partly prompted by the corona crisis, it was whispered that Mercedes no longer wanted to dig so deep into Hamilton’s pockets, all the more because it would be difficult to justify if forced redundancies were made elsewhere within the Mercedes group. The British Daily Mail thinks he knows that Hamilton can continue to earn royally.

The paper indicates that Hamilton is about to sign a new three-year deal, worth a total of 120 million pounds. The forty million pounds he would receive per year, excluding bonuses and sponsorship income, equates to a whopping 45 million euros.

Hamilton is on the cusp of winning his seventh Formula 1 world title, which would put him on a par with the untouchable Michael Schumacher. That means that Hamilton may also be able to ask for the main prize. Whether Mercedes will actually agree to this remains to be seen. After all, earlier predictions of the newspaper in question have not always come true.
