Hamilton: “I was ahead of Verstappen and tried to avoid a collision”

Max Verstappen on Lewis Hamilton were allowed to join the press conference after the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna and there both gentlemen held another lecture regarding the opening phase. Hamilton thinks that there has been contact with the car of Verstappen, while the Limburger says that no touché took place.

Fight right at the start

Already at the start of the race at Imola, Verstappen and Hamilton had a fight. The latter was allowed to start from pole position, but Verstappen clearly had a better start with more speed. The Red Bull quickly found itself next to the Mercedes and at turn 2, Verstappen finally struck. Hamilton says Verstappen was able to overtake him because he did everything he could to avoid a collision and therefore went over the curbs, damaging his wing. According to the Briton, there was light contact with the Red Bull car, but Verstappen says the two have not touched each other.

Verstappen: “Was no contact”

During the press conference after the race, it became clear that Verstappen and Hamilton both hold a different truth. “I don’t think we hit each other”, the driver from Hasselt began, to which Hamilton responded briefly: “Yes, we did.” Verstappen disagreed: “Then I have to see the video again. I don’t think we touched each other, so I will have to watch it again.”

Hamilton wanted to avoid a collision with Verstappen

Hamilton was then asked how he saw the situation. “I think I had a good start, but Max had a slightly better start than me,” said Hamilton, who thinks he was still ahead of Verstappen when entering Turn 2. “I think I was ahead of him entering Turn 2, but I was trying to avoid a collision. Max kept coming, so then we had that collision and I had to get over those big curbs. But I’m glad I did. I was able to continue and that I only had damage to my endplate, “said Hamilton, who clearly has a different opinion than Verstappen.
