Hamas Returns Body of Kibbutz Nir Oz Resident Eliyahu Margalit; 18 Hostages Remain Unaccounted For
Gaza – Hamas on Monday released the body of Eliyahu margalit, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz who was taken hostage during the October 7th attacks, Israeli officials confirmed. The return brings the total number of bodies recovered from Gaza to 37, as the search continues for the remains of the 18 hostages still believed to be deceased and held by the terror group.
The repatriation of Margalit’s body, while offering a measure of closure to his family, underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis stemming from the hostage situation. Over 130 Israelis and foreign nationals where initially abducted during the Hamas-led assault, sparking a military operation in Gaza and international efforts to secure thier release. Despite a November ceasefire deal that saw the release of over 100 hostages, a significant number remain in captivity, with their fate uncertain.
According to statements from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, Margalit, 73, was a retired teacher and avid gardener. He was taken hostage alongside his wife, Ritva, who remains in Gaza. The forum continues to advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, emphasizing the immense emotional toll on families awaiting news of their loved ones.
As of Monday, approximately 128 hostages remain in gaza, including 37 confirmed dead. negotiations for a second ceasefire and hostage release deal are ongoing, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, but have stalled amid disagreements over the terms of a potential agreement.
