Halo system saved me, says Chinese pilot after horrific F1 crash

“It was a big accident and I’m glad I’m OK. The marshals and the medical team were fantastic at the track and responded quickly. I also have to thank the (international federation) FIA and Formula 1 for all the work they’ve done and are doing to improve the safety of our cars,” Chou Kuan-yu said on the team’s website.

After the start, the Chinese driver made contact with Pierre Gasly and George Russell, after which it was Russell from Mercedes who crashed into his car and caused it to overturn. Júki Cunoda, Esteban Ocon and Albon also got involved in the carom. The British Grand Prix was interrupted for almost an hour.

A native of Shanghai, Zhou Kuan-yu, was extricated from the car by rescuers for several minutes, the rider was conscious the whole time. Already during the restarted race, the management of Alfa Romeo announced that the pilot was fine and without fractures. “The halo (head protection system) saved me. It shows that every step we take in the development of our cars has real and valuable results,” said Chou Kuan-yu.

While Ocon and Cunoda continued the race, Albon also ended up in the care of doctors. The Williams driver also flew to the hospital for a check-up. But later he also said that he was fine. “All good, all pets ok,” Albon tweeted, referring to the animals painted on his own helmet. “But the main thing is that Chou Kuan-yu is fine. Thanks to the entire medical team and for all the news. I’m now concentrating on Austria,” added the Thai Williams racer.

The Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg is on the agenda this coming weekend.
