Halo Infinite: Multiplayer should be free

The multiplayer of Microsoft’s latest Halo spin-off Infinite should be playable free of charge on all platforms. The company’s aim is to attract as many players as possible in order to create a healthy eSports scene.

Will Halo Infinite’s multiplayer become a separate game?

During the Xbox Showcase on July 23, real game scenes of the new Halo Infinite were shown for the first time. Shortly thereafter, rumors of a free-to-play multiplayer started. A trusted industry insider then confirmed the rumors on Twitter. He also speaks of 120 frames per second (FPS) on Xbox Series X, a Battle Pass not explained in more detail, and he describes the multiplayer as “arena”.

It is interesting that the single player from Halo Infinite is given with 60 FPS. That speaks for plans to want to publish single and multiplayer separately. The competitive scene would benefit enormously from this because every user could access the multiplayer for free. The foundation stone for a sustainable eSports scene would thus be laid.

If the rumors prove to be true, it is reasonable to assume that Halo Infinite could pursue a sales model similar to that of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In addition to the main game, the latest CoD has released a free Battle Royale mode under the name Warzone. The decision turned out to be a great success. Since Halo Infinite is also a first-person shooter, a similar approach cannot be ruled out – possibly under the name “Halo Arena”.

The eSports history shows that free game titles are more promising when it comes to sustainable league and tournament culture. Whether League of Legends, Dota 2, CS: GO or just recently Valorant and bald Rocket League – they all enjoy a large following, not least thanks to the free access.
