Half of all developers work on delayed games

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) annual survey asks 3,000 game developers about everything from how long their work weeks are to what platforms they focus on. Like the rest of the world, the gaming industry has also been colored by the pandemic, and 44 percent of all surveyed game developers feel that the game they worked on has been delayed because of it. With a few percent more, 49 percent believe it has not been delayed, and the rest answered that they are not working on any game right now.

Last year, 33 percent answered that the pandemic delayed their work, which means an increase of 11 percentage points. It is worth noting, however, that this only indicates how many developers have worked on delayed projects, it does not take into account whether participants work on, for example, the same project. That said, 2021 has enough delays to fill long lists, and it has influenced major titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Halo Infinite.

According to the report, participants have experienced difficulties with teleworking regarding collaboration and communication, and that it has been a contributing factor to delayed titles. Despite this, a majority answer that work from home has not affected their creativity or productivity, while 35 percent experience home work as an improvement.

The entire survey is available to download GDC’s website and contains nearly 30 pages of industry statistics.

Has teleworking affected your productivity positively or negatively?
